Classic Dolomites(Trip #65659)

Tour Overview

A superb week of centre-based walking in one of Europe's most spectacular mountain ranges
The week is based at Hotel Adler, a lovely 3/4 star hotel with wellbeing centre and indoor swimming pool in the small village of Villabassa, just north of Cortina d'Ampezzo. Nestled just south of the Austrian border and sandwiched between the spectacular, jagged limestone peaks of the Dolomites, our base offers an excellent choice of wonderful routes with the opportunity to relax in comfort at the end of a day's walking. We venture into the Fanes-Sennes and Dolomiti di Sesto National Parks, which provide great views of the famous Tre Cime de Lavaredo. With such breathtaking scenery and a vast number of difficult walks available as well, we offer a more strenuous grade on certain departures (see Dates & Prices).

Day by Day Itinerary

Day 1
Start Villabassa.

Day 2
Our first day's walk takes us to the beautiful lake of Pragster Wildsee, where we follow the route of 'SS hostages', leaders of 19 countries who were freed after WW1 by the inhabitants of Villabassa. C grade weeks will also include Hohe Gaisle, before descending to Bruckele.

Day 3
We walk amongst beautiful wild flowers on our climb up to the summit of Strudlekopf, and we explore fortifications and tunnels from WW1 on our return. C grade weeks venture to the summit of Durrenstein first before traversing towards Strudlekopf.

Day 4
Today we visit the Kreutzberg Pass with its Napoleonic trenches and enjoy a quick stop in an hospitable mountain hut. On C grade weeks, this walk is extended with a climb up to the Austrian border.

Day 5
A free day to relax in the hotel's wellness centre or take a self-guided cycle ride around this wonderful area. Alternatively, enjoy a visit to see the iceman (Oetzi) in Bolzano.

Day 6
We enjoy a memorable circuit around the famous three chimneys, Tre Cime de Lavaredo. C grade weeks take a more challenging and exposed route, which includes a traverse across the screes beneath Paterkofel.

Day 7
To complete the week, we take the amazing attacking route of the Austrians up to the summit of Monte Piano (2324m). Using an impressive network of safe paths, bridges and ladders, we find ourselves upon the flat-topped mountain surrounded by some of the most impressive scenery in the Dolomites. On C grade weeks, we enjoy a dramatic traverse of the summits, including an exploration of exposed gun galleries.

Day 8
End Villabassa.
